What do you actually need before starting a business?
A surprising number of people delay starting because they think they need more in place than they actually do. Here’s an honest split of what matters now versus what can wait.
What you genuinely need
A clear idea of what you’re selling and to whom, even a rough version. A way to legally trade, sole trader registration or a formed limited company. A separate place to keep business money. And a plan for how you’ll actually get your first customer, not a logo, not a perfect website.
What people wrongly think they need first
A polished brand identity, a fully built website, business cards, an office. None of these get you your first customer, and plenty of successful businesses started without any of them in place.
What genuinely can wait
Formal contracts and terms of service (start with something simple and improve it). A CRM system (a spreadsheet works fine for your first handful of clients). Elaborate accounting software (get organised, upgrade the tooling once volume justifies it).
The one thing people underestimate
Money to cover a few slow months. Not a huge war chest, but enough that a quiet first quarter doesn’t force decisions you’ll regret. This matters more than almost anything on a typical checklist.
The honest starting point
Register, open an account, and go find your first customer. Everything else can be built in parallel once the business actually has some momentum.
